Nowadays, GB4706 and IEC 60335 standards for household appliances and automotive products have flame retardant requirements for connectors. Usually expressed as meaning that each sample of adhesive is exposed to flame for about 10 seconds, the plastic material needs to have low flammability or self-extinguishing properties.
This test is mainly for connecting the plastic parts of the device, requiring that in the event of combustion, the product can not catch fire or can be self-extinguishing. But to make plastic parts to achieve this requires plastic raw materials to have a certain degree of flame retardant properties. Therefore, some raw material manufacturers have added some additive components to their raw materials to enable them to meet this test requirement. As the combustion test is not charged, after adding some flame retardants and other ingredients, it can indeed meet the test requirements of combustion. However, these products actually work with electricity, and too many additive components in the raw material will make the electrical and temperature properties of the material itself degrade. These decreased performance instead of the product’s safety brings a fatal hazard. For example, the dielectric strength of the product, in the raw material performance data sheet, the parameters of dielectric strength is given in laboratory conditions. But as the ambient temperature rises, the dielectric strength decreases. Adding too many additive components such as flame retardants to the raw material can cause the dielectric strength parameter to drop even faster with increasing temperature. Charged products may fail due to contact resistance and other circuit failure problems, and the temperature of the product rises, may reach about 200 degrees when the product has already produced electrical breakdown due to the decline in dielectric strength, and short-circuiting, burning out the equipment.
Therefore, in order to guarantee the safety of our customers’ products, YYE requires that the plastic raw materials used must not have flame retardant components added to them, but must also pass a flame retardant test. yye’s flame retardant test standard is referenced from the Volkswagen team’s flame retardant test standard TL1011 for automotive parts.
